Roger, thanks for the Varsity session information!
The 1952/53 recordings were also released on MARK56 684 Lp in 1975 as
St.Louis Blues: W.C.Handy narrates and sings.
I found the following reference:
CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY
Richard Durham Papers
Box 15 12 September 12, 1948 Destination Freedom Radio Broadcast W.C. Handy
"Father of the Blues"
Richard Durham created Destination Freedom , a groundbreaking radio series
that dramatized the struggle for civil rights in America. Destination
Freedom aired on WMAQ, a Chicago radio station, on Sunday mornings from 1948
to 1950. In March 2005, Clarice Durham donated the 91 audiotapes to the
Museum of Broadcast Communications.
Anyone have access to this collection - perhaps it is the source of the
recording ?????????
If anyone has TIM BROOKs' LOST SOUNDS at hand, there may be something about
the recording as
google finds a footnote about it, but does not show the text footnoted.
Best wishes, Thomas.

OK, so we've established that the DRG album was a reissue of Heritage and
Audio Archive records. So, who assembled Mr Handy with the chorus and
pianists to make the original recordings, when, where and why?
Sent from my iPhone, which explainz any bad typjng and nonsensical word
choices.
