[78-L] Bell Hood needle for 78 record players

The July 15, 1921 Talking Machine World has an ad on page 24 for the Bell Hood.  It is a little bell shape of metal around the tip of the needle as claims:  "Purifies the tone, reduces the scratching and mechanical sounds to minimum.

Has anyone ever seen one of these 'bell hoods' with its 'semi permanent' needle?  Do you know if it actually did anything or was just a gimick?
