Early Capitols (before 200) have often A, sometimes B, on the labels after the mx.
These are not the takes (sometimes listed), and may have a similar meaning.
Also, for ex., on 215 Cootie's "House Of Joy": mx (678-2A).
Those earlier issues have prefix CAP in the wax.

The R is already on 259 Jo Stafford: Cindy. On the scan it is followed by -1 and a small 6
(mother/stamper?). Does the 424 test really have an A or is it actually a small number?
For ex., on 423 Jo Stafford: I'm So Right, I see 1895-5L 4.
Shortly after 424 the R/L are replaced by letter D (on all scans where visible), for a long time.
First seen on 428 A.Rey: Bloop-Bleep 1941-1D-1.
But 436 June Christy still is 1680-5R-2 4 (but this is a lower mx, of course).
So what is the earliest mx with D?
Do the letters R/L/D indicate the first dub?

>>> I've also seen R and L and assumed they meant right and left tables. At least one of the other figures (1 or A) must refer to the first dub taken from the original 16" lacquer.
