The movement of a small stylus nearer the bottom of a groove is the same as a large one higher up, and the signal will be the same. (The modulations in the lower part of the groove are not scaled down relative to those in the higher part; they are all produced by the motion of the cutting stylus.)

 If you track with a larger stylus which will ride higher in the groove, the groove wall should be cleaner and the larger modulation should yield a stronger signal.
