[78-L] reliable CD-R blanks?

I agree with Steve Williams - I too have found that Taiyo-Uden are far and away the most consistently reliable blanks with much lower error rates than most other brands. So far as I know they are still being made in Japan unlike others, many of which are manufactured by one company in India who are notorious for poor quality.  I was surprised to discover that many of the leading brands including Imation, Verbatim and TDK are now manufactured by them.   I don't know if all JVC branded blanks are now  manufactured by Taiyo-Uden but several batches of them that I have bought over the past year were and the last spindle of Taiyo-Udens I bought had the JVC logo on the shrink wrap..

No-one has mentioned Taiyo-Yuden, which have always been rated the best for
both CD and DVD.  However, since they're the best, they do frequently get
counterfeited, so know your dealer.  Taiyo-Yuden is the OEM now for JVC
blanks.  For AZO dye CDs and dual layer DVD Verbatim are the most reliable.
Also Verbatim Bluray blanks have the least errors of the brands I've tried.

By the way, Sony's replacement blanks were just as useless in real time on
my
machine (HHB).

live concert), you have to use blanks which are reliable at 1x. ? Otherwise,
it's like taking pictures on a bright sunny day in winter with fast film;
the lasar burns the surface of the CDR and the surrounding area and playback
is impossible. ? I must add, however, that this isn't always the case; at
CBC, we were often given TDK blanks to record live concerts and they often
worked fine, even though they were rated up to 52x with no slow end
indicated. ? Unlike David L., I haven't had the problems with SONY blanks
that he describes, however I HAVE had the same shabby treatment from SONY
when it comes to backing up their products. ? Of course, if you NEVER record
live concerts or anything in real time, there's no problem with sticking to
hi-speed blanks, but at least having some 1x blanks on hand is useful
whenever you DO need them.

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like TDK and Sony are the clear
winners.
I'm going to get the TDK Duplicators and give them a try (thanks, Dave).
A few years back I ordered some of Disc Masters mid-line blanks and had
no coasters and no dropouts at any speed (except for 1X which I never
use anyhow). Their main problem was an excessively high shipping cost,
which they seem to have resolved. I'm going to give them another try as
well.
I think they'll supply error rates on request - as I remember they're
LOW - but I don't know if they'll say which manufacturer(s) they use
currently.
Thanks again,
Malcolm
