Wiki gives credit to the Delta Rhythm Boys, the Cats and a Fiddle, and 
mainly the Ink Spots.  I call them precursors.  My vote as the first one to 
gain some popularity is OL' MAN RIVER by the Ravens on National, recorded in 
1947.
