I have always believed that the American record manufacturers introduced high frequency pre-emphasis in 1936; however, I was just reading the Sherman/Nauck book "A collectors guide to Victor Records" and they say that it was introduced at the end of 1939, and it was called "orthoacoustic".  Am I miss-reading something here or is 1939 the correct date?
