[78-L] How to bait 'em with Tatum

I am forced to agree with David on this one...as much as I enjoy 78-L I've
learned quite a lot about the music and the records via such Facebook groups
as American Dance Bands, etc.

I'm not planning to leave this group ever but there does seem to be more
interesting information for ME on Facebook.

Re: Art Tatum. Most of his playing to my dumb guy ear is like taking a
vitamin pill...you know it's "good" and that it's "good for you" but
swallowing it seems more like a duty than a pleasure.

As I recall his first record is backing up Adelaide Hall on her 1932
Brunswick of "Strange As It Seems." I love the record but that's in spite
of Tatum...between her two full choruses he tears off a spectacular, flashy
solo which shows amazing technique and complete mastery of the
keyboard...and yet not only it doesn't add anything to the record, it
actually takes something away. Imagine a performance of some Debussy piano
piece which is interrupted in the middle by Harry James playing
Ciribiribin...it just doesn't fit the mood!

:-)
