Tyner is not a good example to mention. His prissy playing weakened many
a John Coltrane performance, especially the long live recordings. I
don't hear that much creativity in Evans's work, and I've listened to
most "modern jazz" pianists over the 58 years, including Evans. It
sounds more like "The Emperor's New Clothes".

I think it's a case of a musician who is OK, but is praised as something
special. I feel the same about Barney Kessel--he was praised as the
successor to Charlie Christian. There were many more creative guitarists
about, including Remo Palmieri, Bill DeArango, Arv Garrison, Teddy
Walters, Tiny Grimes, Everett Barksdale, Jimmy Shirley etc. I can't
understand why Kessel was singled out for this adulation. I first heard
him fumbling his way through his solo on Lionel Hampton's famous
Pasadena concert recording of "Stardust".
