It would seem to me that the popular music record buying/listening 
public are an incurious lot, and will accept what they are offered, and 
are not prepared to go out to investigate what else is available. They 
aren't interested in analysing the music, but only want soothing noises 
to see them through the day. And they have no sense of history.

Mencken's comments are relevant across the board to many other areas 
such as computer games, mobile phone ringtones, tv fare, online gambling 
etc.
