Or if you don't worry about rocker cred as such and just look at the biggest pop hits of 1957-1959, Wilbert Harrison didn't write "Kansas City," Johnny Horton didn't write "The Battle Of New Orleans," Bobby Darin didn't write "Mack The Knife," the Diamonds didn't write "Little Darlin'", Ricky Nelson didn't write "A Teenager's Romance," Tommy Sands didn't write "Teenager Crush," Dion didn't write "A Teenager In Love," the Platters didn't write "Only You," Bobby Day didn't write "Rockin' Robin," Jimmie Rodgers didn't write "Honeycomb," Charlie Gracie didn't write "Butterfly," Dodie Stevens didn't write "Pink Shoelaces," Jackie Wilson didn't write "Lonely Teardrops," Frankie Avalon, Pat Boone, Fabian.... For actual success at the time these were the 1957-1959 parallels to 1940-1942 Bing Crosby, Jimmy Dorsey.

"It became less common when the rock and roll era came along, as performers started writing more of their own material...." Seems to me that how much writing your own tunes dropped off and when during say 1940-1960 is pretty unclear. And how much that had to do with rock and roll.Rock around the clock good golly miss Molly, whole lotta shakin' goin' on all shook up, wake up little Susie young blood oh boy,Joseph Scott ----- Original Message ----- From: Jeff Lichtman Sent: 04/24/14 12:02 PM To: 78-L Mail List Subject: Re: [78-L] two hits - same song I assume you're looking for records that were released at about the same time. Here are some: Hot Rod Lincoln: Johnny Bond and Charlie Ryan and the Timberline Riders in 1960 Grazing in the Grass - Hugh Masakela in 1968, The Friends of Distinction in 1969 Abraham, Martin and John - Dion in 1968, The Miracles in 1969, and Moms Mabley (!) in 1969 Cast Your Fate to the Wind - Vince Guaraldi in 1963, Sounds Orchestral in 1965 Ain't That a Shame - Fats Domino and Pat Boone in 1955 Alley Oop - The Hollywood Argyles and Dante & the Evergreens in 1960 There are many more examples. It became less common when the rock and roll era came along, as performers started writing more of their own material, but it still happened. >. . . the question for The Panel this evening is whether this >phenomenon was ever repeated in the post big band days of the >crooner/croonettes and on into the rock n roll days up to today.
