Oh, you mean the famous "Doggie-In-The-Window-interregnum?

Most of today's popular music is still rock-based, but not all, and the
common rock beat is losing ground, as far as I can see.
Hip-Hop, nu-soul, house music etc usually builds on syncopated beats,
different kinds of electronica lean towards jazz, ambient music or
Latin, and, locally, the French produce loads of new popular singers in
the chanson tradition, many of them far from depending on rock rhythms;
Americana includes a lot of stuff that isn't rock...etc.
I'd say we're more and more into an era without one label, but a
multitude of labels. Which I think is good for music. It has opened up
interest, among young listeners, for vintage material as well. Many of
today's computer games, for instance, as well as movies, feature
recordings from the 1930's, 40's and 50's.
