Both sides of that record, the other being "Smalley's Jump," are included on JSP's box set _Houston Might Be Heaven_.

Isaah H. "Ike" Smalley Jr. (1915-1991) was a Houston saxophonist and bandleader who was friendly with people like Arnett Cobb, Milt Larkin, and Calvin Owens. This record was made about 1948. One of the female singers who worked with Smalley in the late '40s was Inez Newell. (She appeared in two low-budget feature films, but I don't think she sang in either of them. She was the sole writer of the song "My Daddy's Got It" copyrighted 9/9/44.) Smiley and his Rockateers Hi all, I found a wonderful blues on a 2006 CD titled Midnite Blues Party vol. 2 - billed to Sister Rockaway with I.H. Smiley and his Rockateers, titled Young Woman's Advice - the track apparently taken directly from shellac. Now this lady has a great, apparently gospel-influenced delivery and the band does a good job - which makes me think that both are pseudonyms for artists who'd done more. Anyone who knows who these Sister Rockaway and I.H. Smiley are? Or some more information on them? Apart from that one track on that CD that is in the collection of about every on-line music service, nothing pops up on Google. Thanks, Koen _______________________________________________ 78-L mailing list 78-L at klickitat.78online.com http://klickitat.78online.com/mailman/listinfo/78-l _______________________________________________ 78-L mailing list 78-L at klickitat.78online.com http://klickitat.78online.com/mailman/listinfo/78-l
