"Rock 'n Roll swept the nation when the white kids"
The interest of young blacks in the rock and roll sound as of 1949 was national (top ten hits on the black jukebox chart for that sound, none any more for e.g. Bo Carter's sound). Young blacks all over the country also liked Woody Herman's band, for instance, and already had for years -- the likes of Roy Brown and Roy Milton were just even more mainstream than Herman to what young black listeners wanted.
