[78-L] Merle Travis on ATLAS 78?

I think Laine's very first recording was on Bel-Tone ("... Wee Small Hours...") but he was on Atlas early too. I think he hit his stride on his c. 1947 recordings when he was alternating sessions for Atlas and Mercury with much the same fine personnel. For comparison I think Sinatra had done nothing better at that time, with the exception of the way he was singing sweet ballads back as of about 1943.

Imo Luke Jones and Alston aren't particularly important as jump blues of the time goes, second- (or even third-) string Louis Jordan pretty much. For California generic jump blues around then I like Buddy Banks and Geechie Smith better, for example -- and of course some of the best-known people such as Roy Milton. Red Mack could be a very good swing trumpeter, in general, not necessarily notably on Atlas.

Also many blues titles by Luke Jones on Atlas, and sessions by Red Mack and by Johnny Alston (in "Sepia Series").. This Atlas label (with 100 series) was also released in Canada. Were these Frankie Laine's first recordings? Here is a copy of Bruyninckx: Luke Jones & his Five Joes or with Joe Alexander's Highlanders : George Vann (vcl-l,d) Red Mack (vcl-2,tp) Joe Lutcher (as) Clarence Williams (vcl-3,p) Joe Alexander (b) Luke Jones (vcl) Los Angeles, c. 1944-45 AT142 Going down slow (1) Atlas 115, 142, Oldie Blues (Du)OL8012 AT143 Feeling low down (1) 116 AT144 What you bet (2) 115, - AT145 Four or five times (1) 116 AT159 Graveyard blues (1) Atlas 122, Oldie Blues (Du)OL8012 AT160 Worryin' anyhow blues (1) 123, 160, - AT161-1 Jump the boogie (1,2) 122, 123, 160, - AT162-2 Shufflin' boogie - Note : "Shufflin' boogie" exist in a coupling either with mx. It really went back to "Denomination Blues" by Washington Phillips (1880-1954). > My favorite recording artist for Atlas (while on Atlas) would be Frankie Laine who made some great, great recordings for them apparently in breach of his contract with Mercury. > Joseph Scott > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Clifford Bolling > Sent: 02/11/14 05:48 PM > To: 78-l Online > Subject: [78-L] Merle Travis on ATLAS 78? > > Just found a Merle Travis record on an ATLAS label 78. I have a ton of Nat king Cole and other pop stars on Atlas, didn't know they also did country. Is there a discography for the Atlas label somewhere online? The only Atlas label records I can find are for the 1980s-1990s jazz label. Thanks!
