[78-L] Problem with very high energy incorporated into remastered 78s

I have occasionally found myself listening to some sound files of remastered 78s - mp3s and CDs - that seem to have incorporated some sort of very high energy that is painful to my ears. One friend (Friend #1) did a CD set which I can only tolerate if I play it in one room and listen to it in another room. I presume sound of the energy gets absorbed in the playing room.

Another friend (Friend #2) has started using a program called iZotope RX - RX3 which produces very nice sound, but my ears can't tolerate the energy.

A third friend with sound experience, but not with remastering 78s, (Friend #3) suggests that this problem arises from remastering programs' compression of sound. I hardly know anything about sound compression or sound compression issues, but I do know that I listen to most recordings comfortably, unremarkably, and with no issues, while some remastered 78s are intolerable to my ears.

Can anyone explain what is going on and offer any advice and guidance I can pass on to Friends #1 and #2?

Thanks./steve
