[78-L] Gennett problem

As part of a transfer project I'm slaving away on, I have a batch of Gennetts 
(and related pressings on Champion, Black Patti and other labels) that are 
extremely difficult to track without much groove noise and swishing. And with 
every cartridge and stylus I try, I hear louder cleaner sound as I lift it out 
of the grooves. These also have no run-outs. Is it possible that they were 
recorded on aluminums, and embossed? Speak-O-Phone equipment?
