The tack bumpers are exactly what was used back then, a half moon of rubber
with a metal "nail" in it to affix it to the wood. You can even use the
existing tack bumper holes, although you sometimes have to put a bit of a
toothpick in the hole to get the new tack to stay tight.

I would be very cautious about introducing modern parts into an artifact
that's close to 110 years old.
