[78-L] Marian Anderson

David, I guess the mx.nrs on (Joe) Davis are reversed, and thus correct on
Masterpiece 8532 [this is the correct nr]
Then Rainer is right about Artiphon 11749/50.

I assume it is as follows:
Artiphon 11749/50 has Heav'n & Sometimes, mx-title connection unconfirmed.
The Swedish Sonora 2034 has 50 for Himmel (Heaven) and there is no reason
to doubt the mx.nr on this label. Presumably directly from Germany (who has
the Artiphon masters?).
Davis/Joe Davis reversed the mx.nrs and give 49 for Heav'n, as does Belvox.
Masterpiece & Remington give 50 again.

As I noted, my copy of the Masterpiece issue (which didn't credit Anderson,
just read "contralto with piano") reversed the matrix numbers. They were
correct on Davis, I believe. "Air de Lia" was the lost side (no US 78 issue).
Belvox pressings look and feel like other Oberstein issues from the early 40s.
All Obie issues are dubs, at least 3 (maybe 4?) sides in the Davis set appear
to be master pressings (no lead-in, vintage lead-out, machined numbers).

Apparently there is a mixing up of the mxs of the first 2 titles, 11749/50.
Assuming that the Artiphon release = matrix numbers supplied by Rainer Lotz
are correct, then Masterpiece 8432 has the correct mxs
(Masterpiece 8432B Sometimes... shows mx 11749-2)
(but are those Oberstein reissues dubs?).

Heav'n Heav'n has following mxs ON THE LABELS:
11749 - Davis DA-26-1, Joe Davis 8900-A, Belvox 503-A
11750 - Masterpiece 8532-A, Remington-Morse 13517-A
Reverses, as far as seen, have the other nr.

Rem-Morse 13517-B is Sometimes..., as expected.
I have not seen Davis 8900 (can it be confirmed?), but have a picture of
Joe Davis 8900-A.
On Joe Davis & Belvox the exact title is "Heav'n, Heav'n", with comma.
Is Belvox a later label?

I assume Sonata is the Swedish label.
Sonora here is also Swedish; I have bad scans of "Himmel Himmel!",
mx ...50, on 2034, and of ..49 on the reverse (also with Swedish title).
(there was also an US Sonora 2000 series; my highest image is 2027 by Roy Smeck).

Sonora 166 is not clear to me. What is a Sonora 100 series?

>>> Marian Anderson's 1930 Berlin recordings for ARTIPHON were reissued
on a number of 78rpm labels, including flexible Phonycord,
Belvox (was this a US label ??), Joe DAVIS, and Masterpiece.

There appear to be 7 masters - were they all issued by Artiphon, what was on the
other side of the odd matrix ??

The issue numbers for DAVIS appear to be an album number-side - is that correct?
What are the ones I've missed ??
Was there any MASTERPIECE issue other than 8532 ??
Any other 78 releases ??

One thing I remember (don't have the discs here to inspect) is that Masterpiece
reversed the matrix numbers. And a few of the Davis sides appear to be master
pressings. I don't know if the Phonycord has dubbed sides, but it's slightly
smaller than ten-inch (and the quality is excellent on it). Blue vinyl.
I've only seen one Belvox.

Also, Belvox was an Oberstein label. It might mean that the 3 discs were sold
as a set. And I had only Phonycord P112 (didn't know about P94).

Here's what was the most up-to-date info on these sides when I did a Marian
Anderson CD 9 years ago (I didn't list any of the other labels, just first issues).
