Jordan picked up the Deacon Jones character when he was a young traveling musician. The character was also in "What Did Deacon Jones Do When The Lights Went Out" by Perry Bradford, 1919, "When Sister Jackson Told On Deacon Jones" by Edwards and Richard, 1921, and in a "Deacon Jones For President" sketch that comedians did.
Billboard's 7/25/42 review of Doc Wheeler's version of "Who Threw The Whiskey In The Well" used the adjective "rock-and-ride" to describe one of the solos. The music just before rock and roll was all connected, in an extremely confusing way.
