Former All-Star Marty Napoleon calls him "Lewis" and so does Dan Morgenstern. Both of course knew him well. And if you take a look at his draft registration card, the clerk had written "Lewis" Armstrong so I would suspect that as far back as 1918 Satchmo was calling himself "Lewis".
