Apparently the Alfredo Mendez orchestra was a well-known cuban music
orch founded around 1927.

Diaz Ayala in his cuban and latin american music discography includes
this article on Alfredo Mendez. It is a poor contribution, if it is
true that it was a famous orchestra fouded in 1927, only a few records
form the fifties are cited.

Maybe the Dick Spottswood Ethnic Music discography gives more data.

Translated from Diaz Ayala:
ORQUESTA ALFREDO MÉNDEZ
True name was Alfred Mendelssohn, a jewish bandleader from New-York
that started to play cuban music at the end of the thirties and
contiinued in the forties.
Such names as Davilita [?] and Bobby Capo [a world famous bolero
composer] featured in his band. They also worked for NY radio
stations.
