Too long to tell details here. They should have been burned as audio but have some kind of digital nonsense signal instead . Not mine. A connection with the university where I work (not the university itself, for which I am grateful!), and they know I make/use a lot of CDs so when they found out they had a bad run, I got asked to help unload them "in the greenest possible way." Worse yet, many were mailed to folks across the country, so it's a PR nightmare and postage drain for them.
So far, "greenest possible" means spending more green to haul them off, so methinks I shall punt back to the source and they can take them to the landfill some rainy night in the cloak of darkness. I gather the mailed-out ones can just be tossed one-at-a-time and not the problem of the sender, but they wanted to know what to recommend to the recipients when they sent the replacements - hence the question.
