[78-L] Stolen tunes

I had a few different versions of the Anniversary Song but it wasn't until a few years ago I heard "Danube Waltz" on a cassette put out by Reader's Digest.I had first heard "Anniversary Waltz" by Jolson via the Decca album he recorded at the time "The Jolson Story" came out with Larry Parks. The last version of the song I acquired was on an Everest produced LP of Artie Shaw which I also have on a couple of cheapie LPs-Galaxy and GoldenTone,I think-as well as on a cheapie MGM album called "Metro".Albert Marx reacquired the
original Musicraft masters and rereleased them on his reactivated Musicraft label around 1982 or so.The late Skeets Herfurt provided me with the missing personnel back in the mid to late '80s during a phone conversation I had with him;he played lead alto on the dates which were in June of 1946.I'd known him for some 10 years up until his death in 1992.He told me that Shaw had a small interest in Musicraft-to the tune of about 15%.

recorded a couple of sides,"Night" which was based on "My
Heart at Thy Sweet Voice" by Saint-Seans and "Alone At Last"
based on the first movement of Tschaikowsky's Piano Concerto
No.1.Some years later,an all girl group from the sixties
recorded a number called "The Mountain of Our Love" based on
"In The Hall of the Mountain King" by Grieg. That one dated
from about 1964 or thereabouts;I don't remember the name of
the group.Tschaikowsky was a gold mine for melodies that
were used.I had that one 78 on OKeh that was based on the
first movement of his Symphony No.6 in b minor but I can't
remember the name of the tune nor the artist.I first thought
it was Les Brown but I don't think it was.More like Frankie
Masters.I haven't seen it in years. Then there was that
Coleman Hawkins recording of "How Strange":I have it on CD
but I also have it on a Bluebird 78 by Van Alexander on
 B-10189-B.According to the label,it was
 >>>   based on a work by one
B.A.Prozorovsky called "Kak Stranno" and was featured in an
 MGM movie called "Idiot's Delight".In the RCA/Reader's
Digest set,"The Great Band Era",there is a 1941 recording of
"The Things I Love" by Jan Savitt:it was based on a
Tschaikowsky piece.Brown's recording of "Everybody's Making
Money but Tschaikowsky" was timely:as I said, many of his
melodies were used, especially during the ASCAP war against
 radio in the early forties.
