[78-L] Glenn Miller - why so late on the label?

Getting one's name on a studio band label as nominal leader didn't have
anything to do with the process of forming a working band. There are a
number of Electradisks which are all the Joe Haymes band but the pseudonyms
were rotated between some of the sidemen, e.g. Mike Doty, Dick Clark, Carl
Snyder, etc.

Have no idea why those 1933 Vocalions were issued under Berigan's name but I
doubt he organized or managed the session.

I can't recall the story on those Melotones from '30 and '31 issued as by
Bennie Goodman and his Orchestra but I don't recall that BG was any more
than the nominal leader...ditto for those Columbia sides around the same
time with Charlie Teagardem Fats Waller, etc.

The Dorseys were on a ton of studio records but as far as I know the records
issued in '28 to '30 under their name were by the actual Dorsey Brothers
Orchestra, which seemed to have a pretty consistent personnel.

He certainly had more of that available to him than Bunny Berigan had in
1933. It might be argued it cost nothing to get his name on the label over
anybody else's in the band - or even a totally fabricated nom de disque.
Look at all the other lesser lights who got their names on the labels when
nobody had heard of them, either.

Was this a conscious decision on Miller's part to keep his name off the
labels until he was ready for a big debut, or "luck of the draw"?

My guess is that he had to build up capital and a book of charts, find men,
rehearse etc.

Evidently I was not clear enough on the question.
Why did it take him until 1935 to get credited such as "Glenn Miller and His
..." ...orchestra, boys, men etc?

He's on the label of the Dorsey Brothers ANNIE'S COUSIN FANNY as composer,
and I think that's 1933.
