[78-L] NBC chiimes

I have a POOR recording of a show hosted by Dave Garroway (presumably on 
NBC) in which a few international orchestras offered their versions of "The 
NBC Suite."  The orchestrations are based on the three chime notes.

As those who are on the ARSC list know, there's currently a discussion going 
on at that site about the NBC chimes.

I recall reading a story but I'm very sketchy on the details.  I think it 
was about Bruno Walter with the Columbia Symphony performing a work to be 
broadcast on the CBS network.  The problem was that this work, (it may have 
been by Shostakovitch or Stravinsky, or someone else), very prominently 
featured the tones of the NBC chimes and for that reason CBS didn't want to 
broadcast it.  I may have any or all of the details wrong on this but does 
this ring a bell, (pun intended), with anyone else?
