This was not at all unusual in that era. I can think of two other men 
whose names were Jean, pronounced "Gene": Raconteur extraordinaire Jean 
Shepherd, and radio announcer (and later television actor) Jean Paul 
King, the spelling of whose name is given in contemporary books of who 
was who in the entertainment business.
