Paul Tanner was ubiquitous here in L.A. For nearly a quarter-century he taught a history of jazz course at UCLA. I never took it, but I did take a similar (and probably more rollicking) course taught by Gerald Wilson at Cal State Northridge, which really opened my eyes (and ears) to jazz when I was in college. Wilson is, fortunately, still with us at 94.
