I don't believe that Vince's aluminum bass is more 'resonant,' though it
does have a somewhat different tone from a wood bass. It certainly is
eye-catching!

A couple of years ago I asked everyone on the list to tell their five
favorite 78 rpm artists and then consolidated the answers into one list.

I think now is a good time to do this again. So please, were you to go to
your record shelf right now, who would you play? Five only, please. And
only 78s.

Mine would be

Wardell Gray
Harry Choates
Little Walter
Stuff Smith
Milton Brown

Sorry I do not have more than this; I no longer have this disc: Schirmer
55xx Charles Benci and his Gypsies Captain My Captain This too had a vocal
side, which may have been a Doina. The title I recall is from the
instrumental sideI think this was a stray disc from an album set. Benci
mostly recorded for Victor, RCA Victor and Gold Seal, but he also made a
Columbia or two. And that's all I really know about him.

Five only? Argh. Well, I'll play the game but like somebody else said,
the list might change tomorrow.

But for December 18, 2012 I will say:

1. Tommy Dorsey
2. Sam Lanin
3. Richard Himber
4. Fred Rich
5. Joe Haymes

The above are almost certain to be among the artists I would play if I
decided to spend a few hours with my 78s.

I'll just add one more individual record, which I have listened to about 20

times this last week...the Dewey Jackson Vocalion of "She's Cryin' For Me."
But I've been playing it on line, as my original 78 is not in super-duper
condition.

It's one of the most exciting jazz records of the 20s or any other decade
you could pick. Exciting isn't really the right word...I actually get a
physical rush from Jackson's stop-time chorus and how he smoothly removes
the mute for the ride-out!

Best to all from

Five? Ok.

1. Bob Crosby

2. Jimmie Rodgers

3. Doc Evans

4. Spike Jones

5. Bunk Johnson

Like most of you tomorrow night it would not be the same five.

Like Taylor I'll add one individual record: the Muggsy Spanier Bluebird of
Relaxin' at the Touro.

Roger Wade
Really Old Records

Oddly enough, I didn't list a record that's sitting a few feet away from me,

and is one of those things I've been listening to since I was a kid and have
to
hear every few months...Rex Stewart's DIGA DIGA DOO. On a vinyl pressing.
