With all this talk of Beatrice Lillie and Florence! Foster!! Jenkins!!!, this seems an appropriate time to bring up Dorothy Shay. I'm trying to find the correct spelling of the name of the silent movie actor who "wears lots of paint, to make him gruesome when he ain't". I admit it took me a number of years to discover that the mockingbird wasn't "still singing with a ringing o'er the waves", so I may be mishearing. Search engines are usually helpful in this regard, but entries like "Carla Hughes" or "Karl LeHews" have so far mainly produced a bloodthirsty schoolteacher from Misssissippi and an Olympic track medalist from Alabama.
I'm beginning to wonder if such an actor ever existed, but I know Dorothy's west coast counterparts, the Beverly Hillbillies, make reference to him, as well. Speaking of whom, wouldn't Cousin Pearl have loved that phono-lamp! I've heard one and they aren't half bad, although I'm dubious about its having an RCA head in 1919 or 1920. The pièce de résistance has to be La Liberté éclairant le monde; I'm so inspired I'm looking for a similar finial for my Weber grill. Thanks,Jim
