Brian Henson & Colin Forbes invaluable survey of UK Sheet Music hits
1946-1959 is now available online. You'll find it here:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/popmusichistory/
Click on a year and you'll see all chart entries on Top 10, Top 20, Top
24 or Top 30 (depending on year).

These top lists were compiled by the Music Publisher's Association (from
1949) and were the only top lists for popular music in the UK before the
advent of the New Musical Express' singles' chart in 1952. It took some
time for that list to be established, so the sheet music list was THE
list for popular music in Britain until the mid 50's.

The book covers a period of popular music for which discographies are
rare; I've found it useful in many ways:
From dates of list entry it's possible to deduce release date
(especially when several recordings are listed for a particular song)
Songwriters are listed for each song
Record catalogue numbers are given for each release
Format is indicated: 78, 45 or both
Etc.
What's missing online are the artist and title indexes, the commentaries
on each year, and the introduction and preface.
Happy hunting!
