Musical styles were changing - many of the tunes were more 'riff' based,
particularly after the influence of Count Basie. But specifically to
Goodman, the inclusion of Charlie Christian inevitably led to a change of
direction to accommodate his own unique (for the time) style.

Several factors, one being the closeness of the miking, another, an updated
sound approaching bop. The spareness allows for the individual instruments
to make their marks. I am sure other will pipe in on this.
