Hi Mike,
Yes - this has made fairly big news here in Britain and I am personally disgusted at the fact this has been allowed to happen. It is part of a growing trend whereby the BBC (funded by the British taxpayer) is latching on to the 'throw away society' that has become so prevalent here in Blighty.
What the BBC have previously done with their record libraries is terrible (many 78s and transcriptions were binned for example) and I can only hope that as a saving grace in all of this, some of the gear that is up for auction goes to people who will appreciate it as it seems the BBC are not interested in Britain's heritage or social history.
Other BBC stations like Radio 2 have changed beyond recognition with the removal of most pre 1970s music from the programming and now the World Service is going.
That is why I feel (as someone in their 20s) it is important to preserve older music for future generations as larger organisations seem to be taking steps to shy away from it and if people could preserve older equipment from the BBC's collection then that is all the better aswell.
Matt in 'Great' Britain

Subject: [78-L] BBC World Service Going Out Of Business Auction
What the hell is going on in England? It looks like the BBC World
Service is having a going out of business auction. If you are in
Britain you have got to look at this. This links to page 4 with some
Studers, Revoxes, Techniques turntables, mic pre amps, and more. But
there are 64 pages with over 1500 lots of these goodies. I have a
feeling that in a few years the BBC Archive is going to be rather upset
that some of these things are gone, especially as parts for Studers
become scarce.

If you keep going, in addition to dozens of turntables, microphones,
minidisc decks still in boxes, you will find framed maps, pictures of
Paul McCartney being interviewed by the Russian Service, an ariel view
of Bush House, and a photo of Cliff Richard (ptwooie) being interviewed.
The last item is a studio clock and lights.
Are they out of business??? I would have thought they woukld have
waited till AFTER the Olympics to close down their International
broadcasting service.
