I, and I'm sure lots of others installed the avast update yesterday but 
I don't have the chrome problem so I would not worry too much about that.

If you have some form of Windows installed then reset the default 
program to your browser of choice. So, if Win 7 then start > Default 
programs and set it there.

If XP or something older then start > Set program access and defaults.

If Vista then abandon all hope.  :-)
