Automatic isn't necessarily better.
I record the entire side, then import it into Audacity. It easy to 
separate the tracks as the wave pattern shows the dead spots. Copy and 
paste them into new windows, clean up the ends, edit out the chicks and 
stuff, do fade ins and outs and save each cut. That way you can have 
nice smooth transitions and endings. Nero allows you to ad ID text, CD 
name and does normalization if you want it. It has declick and other ad 
ins but I never tried them. Audacity does very well.
It's more work, but not much and the results are very clean.
