[78-L] World constant velocity records--in action!

I've had one World (which I sold, but kept a transfer for repitching). And
Norman Field sent me a transfer of a lengthy comedy routine by Fred Duprez that
ran about 15 minutes. You don't often get to hear vaudeville at its original
length from close to 100 years ago.

There were several "long-plays" before the World - the Neophone 20" of 1906, which is mentioned in one of the comments; the Marathons of 1912-15 (5-6 min/side in the 10", 7-8 min/side in the 12"); and the Lyrics of 1916-18. All were vertical cut, and the latter two closely related in groove style and pitch (as well as both using steel needles). I have a Lyric which gets the overture to WILLIAM TELL absolutely complete on two sides. Well-recorded, too, with about a forty-piece orchestra.

For one thing, I'd be rather concerned about a steel needle running for 10 minutes on one record, and I'm not even certain whether a bamboo or cactus one could endure that length. And since the grooves are constantly exposed to the wheel on the controller, one would also think they might get buffed down after a certain number of plays (maybe even one!).
