Digitizing it first would be a smart move. Then, at the very minimum, the
contents would be preserved.

Subject: [78-L] Mailing an audio tape

Anyone know of any precautions I should take before mailing a fairly scarce
reel of tape to China? Mark it "do not expose to radiation" or "keep from
magnets" or "don't mail during Chinese New Year" or anything along that
line?
Extra insulation? It's an old 2-track open reel tape in a plastic canister.
(Plays fine, by the way, and smells the same as it did when it was purchased
50 years ago.)
