"Automatic" speed will almost certainly be maximum. You have to tell
the burning program specifically to use a lower speed.

I currently use the program CDBurnerXP on Windows. It will burn at
various speeds but tends to slip back to maximum if you don't keep an
eye on it.

Maximum speed burning is like shooting film at higher than the correct
film speed. You get pictures, but not the best.
