I've used Audacity for several years now and is fairly user friendly. You can edit or reduce individual thuds and pops, pan left or right if there is damage to one side of the groove, EQ, fade in and out, normalize and reduce stereo to mono. If you download LAME you can make good quality MP3's as well. Well worth the price ;-)
