[78-L] 55 RPM?

I've just found a pair of 12" EMIDISC lacquers, no idea of the date but the 
material is somebody's private family recording..what's intriguing is that 
printed on the discs, which do not have labels, are speed options to be 
circled. And the options are 33 and 55. (The discs are cut at 78.) Were there 
disc cutters that operated at 55RPM? I've encountered this speed on a few 
hundred discs cut by a collector in Montreal in the 40s, but I thought he might 
have fiddled to get that speed, to get more onto the discs (some were labelled 
55, others 56).
