Fewer than that when you take out the errors. Millers Moonlight Cocktail suffers from a vocal chorus and Booker T's Green Onions was 1972 not 1962. I assume there are other mistakes as well, but this list is cleaner than the one on Wkipedia, anyway

Here's a list of the top ones from 1940..surprisingly, there seem to be only 45

The last charting instrumental I can think of off hand was the Chariots of Fire Theme.

The last one I remember playing on the air was about that time (mid-80s?)
Another measure of the loss of instrumental music would be to see what the last instrumental was to win a grammy - beyond the retro-inductions of "historical" items.
I can't remember one

Okay, Jan Hammer's THEME FROM MIAMI VICE has been pointed out as the last
instrumental to reach #1 (I think that was what the sender meant).

There was a "Theme From.." something that we were playing in the late 80s. I
don't think it was Beverly Hills Cop since that was 1984, nor 48 Hours..they
all sound alike anyway.

In 1982 there were a number of "Hooked on" medleys that got airplay.
HOOKED ON CLASSICS - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
HOOKED ON SWING - Les Elgart
HOOKED ON BIG BANDS - Frank Barber
Later than that there was ROUTE 101 by Herb Alpert in 1990.

This week I plan on running a batch of big band instrumentals. I can't
remember the last instrumental of any kind I heard on top ten radio. Disco
or some flick theme, maybe? Anybody know?
