Subject: Edge Warps--RE: [78-L] How do you successfully play a Durium recorrd?

Might not apply to your specific situation but I've had good luck with my version of a po man's record clamp n ring method using a lot of improvisation to smooth out edge warps in flexible discs including vinyl, cardboard and aluminum based lacquers.

I've cut a series of cardboard rings with an inner diameter (hole) that is just slightly under the diameter of the disc. Center the ring on the platter, place the disc on the rim of the ring and center, place a weight (clamp) over the spindle. Essentially a cheap and over exaggerated "ringmat" which also serves as an edge clamp. Saves me a lot of grief and evens out the discs at their rim. Think I can get an audiophile patent??

For small discs with small inner groove diameters where a conventional clamp would be too big I use an empty round film can turned upside down over the spindle with the turntable clamp (weight) on top. Works beautifully.

I have Vernon Dalhart's recording of "Letter Edged in Black" on Durium, 9-2, seemingly unplayed, but the warp to the disc makes it impossible to flatten enough to play without the weight decreasing the speed to where Vernon Dalhart sounds like Thurl Ravenscroft on muscle relaxants. Anyone figured it out? Might try playing at 33, and converting speed on Audacity, but meanwhile, I turn to you.
