Otis was played on the radio in 1958 (from a 45rpm single, I assume), since I remember the record),
but in May 58 I bought my first EP (Armstrong's West End Blues from the 50s), and within
a few weeks I sold my stamp collection to obtain the reissue of the real thing, the 1928 OKeh on LP,
together with another beautiful reissue of all 12 Hot Sevens on a Philips LP (of course,
I had never heard of both the OK label or Brian Rust at that time).
Forty years later I bought the same Hot 7 LP again, for its wonderful Armstrong head on the sleeve.
In the 50s the new LP was priced f.16.50 (Dutch guilders), at a time when you could rent a student
room for f.50.00 a month; in the year 2000 a room was maybe f.400 wheras the record was f.10.-
(and now I've seen them for 2 euro... = ca. f.4.50).
Sic transit...
78s became uncommon or unavailable in Dutch shops in the late 50s, but in ca. 1956 I went to my
aunt who had a gramophone and played and replayed her 78 of Anton Karas (and I still like it).
But via Pee Wee Hunt and Bill Haley (on radio and movie), and the recommendations in Behrends
"Das Jazzbuch" (available as a Dutch pocket for f.1.25 = ca $ 0.30), my first buy was Armstrong.
I also remember that everyone took a favorite record to a school class party. In addition to pop,
some boys brought Miles Davis (Walkin'), Krupa & Rich (on Verve), Chris Barber with Monty Sunshine
(popular at the time), and the Dutch Swing College (very good in the 50s). And I took my new LP
with me: Dicky Wells In Paris, on a Dutch HMV LP (all 12, with Django). Those recordings had been
made about 22 years before, but that seemed centuries ago.

Niagara Falls NY and I looked in a small record store, which had nothing but 45s.
