[78-L] Bob Brookmeyer

I interviewed him when I was editor of an educational jazz magazine, but
the interview never ran because the magazine only printed one issue. I
found Bob to be a lovely man, passionate about his music, blessed because
he overcame addictions, and someone who had very good advice to share. I
told him that when I returned to composing, that I wanted to be part of one
of his workshops.

His later music is not easy, but he never forgot his roots, and they can be
heard even in his most complex pieces. He was the teacher of two composers
who are highly regarded in the modern big band world, Maria Schneider and
James Darcy Argue. I will certainly miss him.
