78-ellers:

This is too important not to re-post here.

It is happening all over the world. Here is another MAJOR LANDMARK
sound archive in danger of being closed or "re-dimensioned".

Dear Colleagues of ARSCLIST,

I have received the following urgent message from our colleague Gerda
Lechleitner (historical collections), from the Viena Phonogrammarchiv.

This historical archive is now endangered.

Because we cannot send attached files, I don't put the two letters (Word
format) attached. So, if someone want to have this letters, please, he(
she) must send me a valid personal e-mail.

Thak you for your solidarity.

Dear Raphaël,

Tere is the English version,
many thanks for your efforts,
best,
Gerda

The Austrian Academy of Sciences is currently subjected to a process of
restructuring, accompanied by serious budget cuts. According to the
Performance Agreement, which was signed on 4 November 2011 between the
Academy and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research,
several institutes will be closed, while many others will be
"re-dimensioned" (see
http://www.oeaw.ac.at/shared/news/2011/press_inf_20111104.html).

This means that at least 300 out of the Academy's 789 self-financed
full-time equivalent scientific employees are threatened by these
financial straits.

The Phonogrammarchiv now faces a massive budget cut with devastating
consequences for staff and further development: there are plans to pool
the Phonogrammarchiv with other institutes, which in fact threatens the
Phonogrammarchiv with a reduction of about 50% of its overall budget and
- in the worst case - its closure.

It would greatly assist our case if an outside institution/personality
could highlight our contribution to the preservation and accessibility
of scientific and documentary heritage as well as our work in the field
of audiovisual archival methodology.

Therefore, we would be very grateful if you could write letters to both
the Presiding Committee of the Academy and the Federal Minister for
Science and Research (you may use the sample letters attached; however,
it would be great if you had the time to write an individual text). For
tactical reasons, please do not MENTION any INDIVIDUAL MEMBER OF ARCHIVE
STAFF - any achievements are the result of team work!

Please send your letter either as attachment (PDF scan) or as text
message in the email itself (including your name and institutional
affiliation, address) via email by Wednesday 23 November to the
following persons and CC to pha at oeaw.ac.at:

o Univ.-Prof. Dr. Helmut Denk, President of the Austrian Academy
 of Sciences, Helmut.Denk at oeaw.ac.at

o Univ.-Prof. Dr. Arnold Suppan, Vice President of the Austrian
Academy of Sciences, Arnold.Suppan at oeaw.ac.at

o Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sigrid Jalkotzy-Deger, President of the Section
for the Humanities and the Social Sciences of the Austrian
Academy of Sciences, Sigrid.Jalkotzy-Deger at oeaw.ac.at

o Univ.-Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Töchterle, Austrian Federal
 Minister for Science and Research,
 Karlheinz.Toechterle at bmwf.gv.at

We will forward print copies of all contributions bundled in one
envelope each to the Board of the Academy and the Minister for Science
and Research.

We also invite you to sign the general petition of the Academy's
employees; please feel free to mention the Phonogrammarchiv in the
"Kommentar" section there:

http://openpetition.de/petition/gezeichnet/bedrohung-des-forschungsstandortes-oesterreich

http://www.oeaw.ac.at/br/Petition-English.pdf

Thank you very much in advance!

 Best wishes,

The Team of the Phonogrammarchiv
