There are other examples of musicians not playing their usual
instruments, usually with no artistic merit attached to their efforts.
£ddie Miller playing alto with Bunny Berigan.
Edgar Samspon playing clarinet and also with Berigan instead of baritone.
Charlie Mingus, Roy Eldridge, Ben Webster playing piano.
Elvin Jones and Paul Gonsalves playing guitar.
Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan swapping instruments.
A friend of mine is critical of Benny Carter, whom he admires, for playing the wrong instruments and singing!
And all those tenor players who took up the soprano in the wake of Coltrane.
I do like Charlie Parker on tenor though!
