Lucas was right there when it started, but I would give more credit to Roy Smeck and Eddie Lang for pioneering work on the instrument. 

If you want to hear some really fine picking by Lucas, be on the lookout for Pickin' the Guitar b/w Teasing the Frets. He recorded this twice, once acoustically (Brunswick 2536) and once electrically (Brunswick 6508)  (I'm talking about the recording process not the guitar!).
