For the most part, MGM took very good care of its library of negatives. The
original tri-color separations still exist for most of their Technicolor
films, stored at the George Eastman House since they are flammable nitrate.
Plus the fact that George Feltenstein, who is in charge of video releases,
really loves these films. He was the one who found the magnetic tape
safeties of the nitrate 'stems,' and has used them to create true stereo
soundtracks and soundtrack albums.
