Samuel,
Well, first of all, thank you for filling in some of my blanks on X-235, Henry Cowell's "Tales of
My Countryside," which is a particularly elusive set; it has certainly eluded me.
Not that it is particularly useful, but this work is a suite for piano and chamber orchestra,
and by extension, a sort of short piano concerto, arranged from earlier pieces. It was originally
premiered in New York by the NYA Youth Orchestra under Fritz Mahler, October 24, 1940 I believe.
Whatever date it was it was one year to the day that Cowell was released from San Quentin; part of
his probation agreement was that he not show his face in the New York area for one year from the
date of his release. What letters I've read show that he was constantly trying to find a reason to
go into the city before that date, but I don't think Percy Grainger allowed him to. This performance
survives as a broadcast from WNYC.
Although the Gramophone review you cite is from 1943, the recording with the AAYO was made May 7,
1941. Stokowski changed the front title and some of the movement titles; here is what they were
at the premiere:
Four Irish Legends, for piano & orchestra
1. The Tides of Manaunaun
2. Exultation
3. The Harp of Life
4. The Lilt of the Reel
Enno Rikena lists Mxs. XCO 31212-31215. This I think is right; what you seem to have listed as
matrices are the individual disc numbers, but don't take them away! I didn't have those.

Although confine to Columbia Masterworks 78rpm albums - I have the latest version of my discography on-line at:
http://www.78rpmcommunity.com/documents/2/18/columbia-masterworks-78rpm-discography-v-2-0 for people to look over.
With great thanks to James North etc... for additional information, the discography now covers over 900 matrix numbers and a complete listing of all "masterwork" sets (both issued and not issued) by Columbia U.S. for the M series, X series, S series and OP series. (Also a draft of the Canadian D series, J Series)
Of course, this document is a *DRAFT ONLY*.
Constructive criticism, error reporting etc is greatly encouraged.
The actual listings start on page 15.
