I've done that on occasion...I just zone out and forget to bid.    I would 
never presume to make a "counter offer" lower than whatever the  starting 
bid would have been.     Sometimes I offer just what I would have bid had I 
remembered to do so,  even if it's something more than what the start had 
been...that seems only fair to the seller.
